The Last Mud-horse (Toko-toko Asi) ~ (Suriname)
In Suriname
We use a fisherman’s tool
Called the Mud-horse
A sledge for transportation
Of nets, baskets and stakes
Across the coastal mudbanks
To catch shrimp, crab and fish
On the tide’s edge
This dying old technique
Taught from father to son
Lying belly-down on a sledge
And in a particular way
Moving it forward with your feet
