Africa in Me ~ (For Denise)
When the first black woman
Disembarked from a slave ship
To set foot on soil we call Suriname
She brought with her the seeds
Of African culture and heritage
She planted them deep and well
So that all ancestral spirits
Of land, water and air
The Aisa, Ampuku, Kromanti
The whole black pantheon
Could be reinstated in the Amazon
I was not born in Africa
Africa was born in me
